"Dissociation is a defense mechanism, a way of coping with overwhelming emotions or traumatic experiences. It's like pressing pause on life, a temporary escape from the pain."

What Does Dissociation Look Like?

  • Detached.

Feeling removed from oneself or one's surroundings. Feeling disconnected.

  • Numb.

Having a lack of emotional response or sensation. Feeling nothing.

  • Unreal.

Experiencing a sense of unreality. Feeling you or your surroundings are not real.

  • Dreamlike.

Feeling as if one is in a dream or trance. Feeling out of touch.

  • Out-of-Body.

Feeling as if one's consciousness is separate from one's physical body. Feeling you and your body are separate.

  • Amnesia.

Having difficulty remembering events or experiences. Having little to no memories of events or times in your past.

Does any of this resonate with you?

Do you find it is easier to zone out than it is to stay in something challenging or difficult?

Have you ever had an “out of body” experience?

Do you have few or no memories of your childhood?

Do you have difficulty expressing your feelings or thoughts coherently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may struggle with dissociation.
