LPC Associate Supervision

LPC Associate Supervision

Jeri Kay Kao, Counselor in Decatur

First of all, congratulations on completing graduate school and passing the NCE! You put in a lot of hard work to get where you are, and now the exciting part begins!

Looking for an LPC Associate Supervisor is an important first step in building your career. All LPC Supervisors have been through training and know at least the basics in how to help an Associate get their full licensure. But…not all LPC Supervisors can guide and train you in becoming the best therapist you can be starting out.

My name is Jeri Kay Kao and I became an LPC Supervisor because I deeply love my career as a counselor and therapist. I want to teach not only the knowledge of practicing counseling and therapy, but also develop the passion in newbie therapists so they can love their career, as much as I do!

I have a Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling and a second Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have specialized training and experience in working with complex trauma and PTSD. My specialties include anxiety, trauma, PTSD, relationships impacted by trauma, and Dissociative Disorders. I am also trained and certified in providing the Safe & Sound Protocol developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, creator Polyvagal Theory.

Taking a peek at my resume includes working at a psychiatric inpatient facility, first as a student counselor in practicum. Once I had my LPC Intern license (yes, it was called LPC Intern way back when), I began working full time in the Colin A. Ross Trauma Recovery Program at UBH, Denton. From a student counselor to becoming the Director of Trauma within Dr. Ross’s program, I gained an incredible amount of experience working with those in severe crisis, including suicidality, self-harming and self-injurious behaviors, addiction, severe and profound trauma, and personality disorders. It was at this time that I chose to specialize in Dissociative Disorders (including DID), and Complex and Developmental Trauma (including SRA and Organized Abuse).

I have been in solo practice for 6 years, opening ThinkSpace Therapy in 2018. Opening and managing the ins-and-outs of a private practice is not for the faint of heart. It takes more ability than being good at counseling. It takes business acumen, adaptability, ability to network, a specialized niche, and long-term client satisfaction.

What sets me apart from other LPC-Supervisors you may meet? I am committed to helping you become the best therapist you can be. I will prioritize your needs and goals, and my supervision is tailored to your individual needs and requirements of the state of Texas. My private practice is a place you can grow in a safe and supportive environment. You will receive constructive feedback and support, allowing you to grow and explore to find your special niche.

Are you ready to take your career to new levels, and walk away from your time under an LPC Supervisor knowing you are a beginning expert in the field? Are you open to being challenged in your own personal growth AND growth as a counselor and therapist?

Frequently Asked Questions About Supervision with Jeri Kay

  • Think of your LPC Supervisor like a mentor or coach. They're guiding you through this whole process of becoming a licensed therapist. You want someone who's not just knowledgeable, but also someone you can connect with and learn from.

Imagine trying to learn a new sport. Wouldn't you want a coach who understands your learning style and can give you helpful feedback? That's kind of the same thing with an LPC Supervisor. If your supervisor isn't a good fit, it can make the whole experience a lot harder and less enjoyable. So, it's important to take your time and find someone who's the right match for you.

  • Great Question! First, we will have a brief 15-minute consultation by phone to see if we hit it off. Then, if all goes well, we will meet face-to-face and talk more about the logistics of working together. Finally, if we both determine it's a good fit, we will meet again to sign contracts and make a schedule to start meeting weekly.

  • Yes, you can! We have immediate openings specifically for LPC-Associates that work with Jeri Kay. It's a great opportunity for formal supervision, but also the moments in the day when you can have spontaneous supervision. Will you get paid? Absolutely!
