“Trauma can rewrite the script of our relationships, leaving us with behaviors that may no longer serve us.”
Hidden Scars: Trauma and Unwanted Behaviors
-
Withdrawal.
Those impacted by trauma may withdraw from the relationship, seeking isolation or avoiding intimacy. This withdrawal can manifest in various ways, such as spending more time alone, avoiding physical contact or becoming emotionally distant. It may be a coping mechanism to protect themselves from further hurt or to manage overwhelming emotions.
-
Hypervigilance.
Constant fear and anxiety can lead to hypervigilance, making one easily startled or on edge. This heightened state of awareness can show up in being overly cautious, scanning the environment for threats, or having difficulty relaxing. It can make it challenging for one to feel safe and secure in their relationships.
-
Addictive Behaviors.
Behavioral changes due to trauma can manifest in the overuse of substances to numb trauma-related emotions. Excessive engagement in risky activities to manage stress or avoid traumatic memories is also common. Some may engage in self-harming behaviors to cope with emotional pain.
